“The greatest gift is a passion for reading.” -- Elizabeth Hardwick
We're doing the dance of joy! I am pleased to observe that Francesca has achieved the goal of reaching an Independent Level for upper middle school reading, and an Instructional Level for high school reading. She is prepared to enter high school and continue her learning success. My summary of our progress is this: Motivation leads to Engagement leads to Reading Achievement. A motivated, engaged reader reads more, and that practice increases reading achievement.
Characteristics of Good Readers:
Good readers select appropriately leveled reading materials and improve as readers with practice
Good readers read for longer periods of time
Good readers look at the pictures and can predict what might happen
Good readers read fluently, quickly and smooth
Good readers use a variety of strategies while reading
Good readers read for meaning
Good readers are members of a literate community of learners
AlthoughFrancesca and Ihavemore plans over the summer (we have a date to take her friend Ricky with us to the Little Shop of Stories in Decatur to participate in their "Where's Waldo" festivities, and a date to attend our local library's "Buy one, Get one" used book sale), our official tutoring sessions are concluded. As a parting gift, I gave Cessica a copy of "Matched", a dystopian young adult novel, and inscribed it to her.
RESOURCES PROVIDED TO THE STUDENT FOR HER REFERENCE LIBRARY:
Digital Word Wall on personal computer
storysnoops.com (find books by title, author, age, grade, genre, topic, "a book like...", etc.)
